Trump Approval Sinks to Record Low as GOP Revolt Grows

President Donald Trump's approval rating has fallen to the lowest point of his second term, according to a series of recent national polls, while signs of unrest within the Republican Party are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

A Reuters/Ipsos survey released in May found Trump's approval rating at 35%, near the lowest level recorded since his return to the White House in January 2025. The poll also showed a noticeable decline in support among Republicans, with approval among GOP voters falling from levels above 90% early in his term to roughly 79%.

Other surveys paint a similar picture. A Washington Post–ABC News–Ipsos poll found that only 37% of Americans approve of Trump's job performance, while 62% disapprove, marking one of the worst approval ratings of his political career.

Several factors appear to be driving the decline. Rising fuel prices, inflation concerns, and voter dissatisfaction with the administration's handling of the conflict with Iran have weakened public confidence. Consumer confidence slipped in May as Americans expressed growing concern about higher costs and economic uncertainty.

The political fallout is increasingly visible inside Trump's own party. Republican lawmakers and strategists have raised concerns that weakening enthusiasm among GOP voters could jeopardize the party's chances in the 2026 midterm elections. Polling suggests support among non-MAGA Republicans has softened significantly, while some congressional Republicans have begun distancing themselves from aspects of the administration's agenda.

Despite the decline, Trump remains the dominant force within Republican primary politics. His endorsed candidates have continued to perform strongly in GOP contests, demonstrating that while his national standing has weakened, his influence over the party's base remains substantial.

Political analysts say the combination of falling approval ratings and growing internal Republican tensions creates a challenging environment for the White House as the midterm campaign season accelerates. With economic issues and foreign policy concerns continuing to dominate voter priorities, the coming months could prove critical in determining whether Trump can reverse the downward trend and reunify the Republican coalition ahead of November's elections.
